When Jonathan’s son was just six years old, he started to develop medical problems which gradually became more severe.
Jonathan and his wife Sarah have very demanding careers. Both have had to adjust their working lives to balance their caring responsibilities for their son Toby who has two progressive genetic medical conditions. The diagnoses were a shock for the whole family, emphasised by the fact that Toby had no symptoms for the first six years of his life.
When Jonathan recently moved roles within HMRC, his manager suggested he get in touch with the Charity to find out about our Carer’s Passport.
“I found speaking to someone from the Charity quite therapeutic. I realised how beneficial this Carer's Passport could be.”
The Passport is a document we can provide to carers and their line managers which highlights how the individual's responsibilities impact their work. This saves the carer having to explain their personal situation in intricate detail within every new professional relationship. It also includes any agreements on issues such as compressed hours and working from home.
“Instead of having a new conversation with new colleagues, I can just show the Passport. It gets rid of the awkwardness and they don’t need to question why I need more flexibility.”
Toby is now settled into a specialist blind school where he is thriving. The school transports him to and from home and caters to his individual needs. He loves the school so much, he tells his parents he wants to go every day. The family have a challenging time ahead, but are an inspiration to those who make the most of what life can throw at you.
Although we no longer offer the Carer's Passport, we can still help you complete your Civil Service Carer's Passport. By using our Carer's Passport and Carer's Statement Digital Tool, you'll be able to reflect on your caring responsibilities before you have a conversation with your manager and complete your Civil Service Workplace Carer's Passport. The tool also provides holistic information, support and services for outside the workplace including our Carer's Statement.
