Caring and finances

Information about managing debt, benefits, Power of Attorney and financial support if you are a carer for someone.

Dealing with extra costs

If you are struggling with the extra costs associated with caring, speak to one of our money advisers. They can help you to review your finances and look at options. This might include benefits or other support you are entitled to.

Your local Citizens Advice can also advise on housing and council tax benefits, tax credits, income support or carer’s allowance.

Financial assistance

If you need financial help, please apply. We cannot give regular or ongoing help but may be able to help with one off costs.

Depending on your individual situation, we may be able to help if:

  • extra costs are affecting your budget
  • you’ve had to reduce your hours at work or take unpaid leave
  • you need equipment to help in your caring role
  • you’ve had a carer’s assessment and the local authority cannot meet your identified needs.

We support current, former and retired civil servants and their dependants. Find out if you are eligible.

Managing someone’s affairs

As a carer, you may be looking after someone who is unable to make decisions for themselves.

A registered Power of Attorney will allow you to manage a person’s financial affairs. There is also a Power of Attorney to manage someone’s care.

If you don’t have a Power of Attorney, you may be able to apply to become an appointee. If you have this, you will be able to manage someone’s benefits.

Anna’s story
I cannot express to you what that money meant to me at that time. It meant I could put food on the table for my kids. It’s as simple as that. To have a charity like this, just for us civil servants… it’s incredible. To everyone who donates, know that you’ve helped me get my kids through the toughest time of their lives. And mine. Thank you.
