Caring and your relationships

Being a carer can have a significant impact on your relationship with the person you are caring for. And on your relationships with friends, family and colleagues.

Being a carer for a family member changes the dynamic you previously had with them. It can often mean that the boundaries within a relationship change, particularly if you are caring for a partner or parent.

It is not unusual to feel a sense of loss for the relationship that you used to have with that person.

Caring can also bring a renewed closeness and intimacy.

It is important to remember that there is no right or wrong way to feel.

Stephen’s story
The support from the Charity for Civil Servants has been invaluable to me. It really has had a massive impact on my quality of life. This enabled me to move out but still live close to my daughter. I now have my own space to rebuild my life. At a time when I was starting from zero, I felt like the charity kept me going.
