What is anxiety?

Anxiety is a normal reaction to stress. It’s that feeling of fear or worry when we’re unsure of the outcomes relating to any situation. These feelings are unsettling and frustrating, but perfectly normal and something we all feel from time to time.

However, for some, anxiety is exhausting and can have a debilitating effect on their lives. The fear of feeling anxious can actually trigger a vicious circle – dreading the feelings of anxiety and actively go out of your way to avoid anything which may make you anxious.

Living in this state of fear is distressing and unhealthy. The detrimental effect on your health can lead to heart problems, increased chances of having a stroke, a weakened immune system, increased chances or infection and increased blood pressure.

Symptoms can include:

  • Fear
  • Irritability
  • Pessimism
  • Nausea
  • Feeling faint
  • Headaches
  • Unable to relax
  • Sweating
  • Increased heart rate
  • Feelings of dread
  • Fatigue
  • Insomnia
  • Pins and needles
