Whether in the office, working from home or have left the Civil Service, there’s a volunteering role for you.
Whatever role you play, you’ll be helping life-changing stuff happen for civil servants who are really struggling.
We’ve been here for civil servants for generations thanks to civil servants just like you.
It doesn’t matter how much time you might have or what experience you’ve got, we would love you to get involved and make a difference. But be warned, side effects may include connecting with new people, enjoying new experiences and learning new skills!

The process can change depending on the role you apply for, but most will include an informal chat to find out more about you.
This is very much dependent on the role and your availability. When we design roles, we try and keep an element of flexibility so you can volunteer around your other commitments, especially your work if you are in the civil service.
You must be over 18 to volunteer with us, but if you are over the age of 80, you will not be covered by the charity’s personal accident insurance.
Yes, volunteers are covered by our insurance policies. Regrettably, if you are over the age of 80, you will not be covered by the charity’s current personal accident insurance policy.
You can volunteer without it affecting your benefits. However, depending on your circumstances you may need to limit the number of hours you volunteer and declare what activities you are undertaking. You can find out more over at Citizens Advice.
You don’t have to be affiliated with the Civil Service to volunteer with us, however the majority of our roles will require you to be based in a civil service workplace for us to be able to engage across the civil service community as possible.
If any roles are open to retired, former or anyone who isn’t a civil servant this will be specified in the role description.
The Charity is proud to be an inclusive organisation. However, some roles may require a criminal record check. A criminal conviction will not necessarily prevent you from becoming a volunteer but a decision will be made depending on the type of offence and its relevance to the volunteering role.
If it’s something you are worried about then it’s best to let us know in your application.
We’re very careful when developing volunteer role, making sure activities of volunteers and staff remain distinct yet complimentary of each other.
All our volunteering roles will involve some sort of induction and or training. This will be shared with you, before you start your role.
We want our volunteers to feel supported and part of a team. We provide opportunities for volunteers to interact with each other and the charity – online and in person. Policies and procedures to keep you safe, A proper induction and appropriate training for your role.
We’ll keep you up to date with changes and encourage and welcome your feedback so we can improve on things. You can contact us via the Assemble portal and all communication from us will be via this method too.

Our expenses policy explains what can be claimed and how via the Assemble volunteer portal.
The main way we’ll keep in contact with you is via Assemble, the volunteer portal. We may also contact you via, email or phone and sometimes arrange video chats using MS Teams to deliver training, hold coffee mornings and regular catch ups.
